The Real Cost of a 100-Ton Pipe Bending Machine

In large-diameter pipeline construction, the purchase price of a pipe bending machine is rarely where the money goes. The real cost shows up in mobilization in the specialized transport, the oversized convoy permits, the crane lifts, the schedule days lost waiting for a machine that can’t move itself down a right-of-way. This has long been one of the costliest logistics bottlenecks in the pipeline industry.

For pipe diameters up to around 48”, this problem is manageable. For 56” – 1420 mm it becomes one of the defining logistics challenges of the project. Most machines in this class weigh between 90 and 100 tons, sometimes more. Moving them isn’t a transport operation. It’s a project within a project.

A Different Starting Point

When CoRis engineered the PB 42–56, the design brief wasn’t simply “bend X80 pipe at 1420 mm.” It was: bend it, and then get to the next bend site without costing the contractor a fortune.

The result is a machine that operates at 70 tons: 20 to 30 tons lighter than comparable equipment and reduces to 56 tons at 3,000 mm width for transport, in half a working day. No special permits. No oversized convoy. The optimized center of gravity puts only 28 tons on the towing pipelayer, with the extended undercarriage keeping ground pressure within acceptable limits even on unprepared terrain.

This isn’t a marginal improvement. On a documented 60 km pipeline project using 1420 mm pipe, using the PB 42–56 on the right-of-way saved the contractor more than €500,000 compared to conventional transport logistics.

Performance at the Limit

Mobility without bending performance is worthless. The PB 42–56 handles pipe from 1066 mm to 1420 mm OD across API 5L grades through X80 at extra-heavy wall thickness the hardest material in routine large-diameter pipeline construction.

The structural frame was designed and validated using FEM (finite element method) stress analysis, with 3D modeling used to optimize load distribution across the entire machine. The hydraulic system operates at up to 270 bar.
